By any measure, drug addiction is a serious problem. The life of drug abuse ruins and wrecks families. Drug abuse prevents individuals maintain stable employment, or fulfilling their professional responsibilities. Drug abuse is an unworkable burden on the criminal justice system in the U.S., the health system in the U.S., the U.S. social services system.
Even worse, drug abuse kills. Many thousands of Americans die from drug overdoses each year. They leave behind loved ones: parents, husbands, wives, children. Also leave a legacy, a stain, a reminder to us all that the fight against drug abuse is far from won and that we as a nation and a community have an obligation to each other and ourselves to ensure that people who need drug treatment get it.
The good news is that America may finally be beginning to understand the importance of effective and affordable drug rehabilitation services. Now more than ever, drug rehab figures prominently in the national consciousness. In books and films, television programs and networks news shows, Americans are talking about drug abuse and drug addiction, and recovery from addiction to drugs.
Drug treatment centers are no longer seen as pests in the local landscape, programs of drug treatment are no longer discussed only in whispers, as if it were something to be ashamed. Indeed, today the future looks brighter than ever has been, for those addicted to drugs for people who love them and for anyone who cares about the health and welfare of their fellow citizens.
